Meet the Artisans: Translations and Interpretations

Works by the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center

Meet the artisans and come view the works on display in the glass cases on the 3rd floor by the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center.

For 2022 the theme is "Translations and Interpretations." Based on the weavers of the Bauhaus movement's collaborative and experimentation, artisans will start with the same basic striped warp and use different structures and fibers to create their own unique handwoven cloth. The cloth is then sewn and finished into a variety of products by the Center’s team of volunteer sewers and finishers. 

The Hartford Artisans Weaving Center is a small non-profit located in Hartford. Since 2009, their artisan program has welcomed people 55 and older or people of any age with blindness or visual impairment to our creative weaving community. Artisans are taught the art of floor loom weaving and earn a small stipend for the fabric they create. Currently they have 34 artisans, from Hartford and the Greater Hartford region. All their products are handwoven at their studios at 42 Woodland Street and sold at their Annual Open House/Sale, a small number of retail shops, our online shop and our studio shop.
