Join us for a special showing of 'Renaissance Gyal', followed by a dance tutorial led by film choreographer, Lauren Horn.
Renaissance Gyal is a choreographic work, set on a cast of Black women, that explores the ways in which Black women have set a precedent for culture in America, while simultaneously being erased. Inspired by the renaissance, this piece frames Black creativity in movement, music, art and style as a continuous cultural boom deserving of both deference and celebration. At each turning point Renaissance Gyal reflects how American Blackness is a melting pot of many different cultures that unite under the term of Blackness. Through each movement, song, dance and chant it tells the stories of those of Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, Afro-American and African heritage who have come to live in America.

The Albany Branch Library endeavors daily to maintain its role as one of Albany Avenue’s most vital resources. Library service in Hartford’s North End began in 1909, when a branch library was first established inside the Northwest School. It then moved to rented quarters at 1239 Albany Avenue. The branch’s present location at 1250 Albany Avenue opened in February 1950 in a building designed by H. Sage Goodwin. In 2011 a new 8,000 square foot facility on the corner of Albany and Blue Hills Avenues replaced the sixty-one-year-old structure.
